Dot Painting , Mandalas On Stone…My Latest Craft

New to me is this crafting project called Rock Art, Dot Painting Mandalas on Stone. Being  taught  to crochet at a young age, around 8 years old… I have been hooked ever since,no pun intended.Fifty some years later I am still doing craft projects. This newest craft project, dot painting mandalas on stone , is sometimes called “rock painting”.  You can find many examples of  mandalas painted on stone, and there seems to be endless design choices. So grab some smooth river rocks and give it a try.

Where To Find Smooth River Rocks

Where do I find some smooth river rocks? That is a good question! What I do since I live in the desert and close to many dry washes is look there for some rocks that will look good painted. I also go to the home improvement store and I can buy nice landscaping stones by the bag. Some of these make for good dot painting mandalas. That way is probably the easiest way to get a nice assortment of rocks quickly. I also have a friends that makes trips to the ocean. Every time  they go I ask them to bring me back some rocks. I have even heard of craft persons  making their own rocks using Quickcrete concrete filler. Wild huh?

What Else Do I Need For Dot Painting Mandalas?

Aside from getting all of the paints and special tools together to start rock painting there is one thing to keep in the back of your mind. It really does not require lots of money to get started. You do not need to buy lots of those fancy tools you see in the videos just to try the hobby. For instance, a set of drill bits makes nice dot patterns when you use the shank of the bit. Toothpicks, make very nice tiny dots as well. Q tips, crochet hooks, center punches, and ink pens make good tools for rock painting, as well.
